EHCP explained simply

An EHCP is a legal document that describes a child's needs, the outcomes they're working towards, and the provision required to meet those needs. It applies when a child's needs cannot be met by the support normally available in school.

Anyone can request an EHCP needs assessment - parents, schools, or the young person themselves. The Local Authority has 20 weeks to decide and complete the plan if agreed.

An EHCP is not a diagnosis, a punishment, or a permanent label. It is a structured way of making sure provision is properly written down, legally enforceable and reviewed annually.
